5 amazing things you’ll experience at an overnight campus visit

By Janelle Higdon

Tour. Talk with an admissions counselor. Take a class. That’s your typical college visit experience.

If you’ve taken a campus tour (or two, or 10), you’ve had the first glimpse of your future university. But sometimes that first preview doesn’t quite give you the full picture. Since choosing a college is one of the biggest decisions you’ll make in your lifetime, it should be an informed one.

Visiting a college campus and staying overnight provides flexibility and opportunity that you might not have in a regular visit during the day. It is an immersive experience, and will help you to picture yourself there, and to see if it’s a good fit.

Here are the top amazing things that you will experience at an overnight campus visit.

  1. Experience dorm life firsthand.
Dorm life is full of energy and community. You might be able to tour the dorms on a regular visit day, but staying overnight will give you the chance to experience the vibe of the dorms. If you’re looking for a Christian university, you won’t have to worry about experiencing “partying” behaviors in the dorm, either. Just the crazy fun.
  2. Be immersed in the community.
With an overnight visit, you’ll be able to blend yourself into the student body to a certain extent. Be on the lookout for how students interact with each other, staff, and faculty. Are they positive? Supportive? Ask yourself if it’s a community you would like to join.
  3. Attend classes and meet faculty.
Meet your professors and learn their teaching style in person. The faculty you interact with over the course of your visit could be your mentors in the future.
  4. Experience the university mission in real life.
Attending for 24 hours will give you a glimpse into how the university lives out their mission and vision claims. This is especially important if you’re looking to attend a Christian university.
  5. See yourself on campus—and find out if it fits.
Becoming a student for a day will help you truly preview campus life. Can you see yourself there? Walking to classes, worshipping in chapel, hanging out with friends in the dorm? Yes? You’ve found your fit.
